| Are you an opera singer interested in auditioning for COLA? | ||||
| Currently, we are casting for our opera next year. Role descriptions will be coming soon. We cast singers usually only after seeing them onstage in a production. Since we are doing contemporary performances completely different than mainstream opera, it is important for you to see one of our shows so that you know what is expected of you before you contact us to come see you. An acting or musical theatre background is a plus, because there could be unsung diologue. There are no weight restrictions or age restrictions. There are absolutely no DIVAs allowed, and no park and bark. Actually the opera CINDY LOU has dogs in it, so there will be a little barking, but absolutely no parking! We do hold auditions once a year, 1-3pm on Thanksgiving Day at the Kiwanis Club located at 2525 Valley Drive in Hermosa Beach. You will be singing for individuals and families receiving a free dinner at the "Annual Mama Liz Free Thanksgiving Day Dinner". Contact us to reserve a time slot. Repertoire should include one or more arias in English. This is not like a regular audition with judges at a table, but instead you will have an audience, as we are looking for great performers, not great auditioners. Many of the dining guests have never heard opera. Our primary goal at Contemporary Opera of Los Angeles is to introduce opera to people who have never heard it, to dispel the reputation of stuffiness and pretension which has alienated many. While many are convinced that the only KILLING taking place in opera today will be the audience members dying from boredom, after seeing one of our performances they are surprised to find that they are willing to give opera a chance. We are only looking for performers who share our vision, who are up for anything at anytime, who are hard working, and who are excited that the proceeds benefit charity. In the case of those performers who are from out of town and do not have any local performances in which we can see them, we have allowed them to send us a video or DVD of themselves in performance. It is a little more difficult for out of town performers as they are responsible for thier own transportation and housing. Are you still reading this? Then you may be what we are looking for in a performer. Let us know when and where you will be performing and we will try our best to come see you. We wish you all the best in your career.
