| Our primary goal at Contemporary Opera Los Angeles is to introduce opera to people who have never heard it, to dispel the reputation of stuffiness and pretension which has alienated many. While many are convinced that the only killing taking place in opera is the audience members dying from boredom, after seeing one of our shows they are surprised to find that they are willing and excited to give opera a chance. Giving back to the community by continuing to keep up high and innovative performance and artistic standards, we also donate a portion of the net proceeds to worthy and deserving charities and in addition, we send our performers into schools through our outreach program - especially those schools which have no music education. We are very proud of our company and it's dedication to "Making a Difference with Exceptional Music." Using contemporary themes and the world's best operas and performers as our media, Contemporary Opera of Los Angeles creates performances that make entertaining and artistic statements. We use such elements as contemporary story lines and costumes, English text, spoken dialogue, a shortened running time, and a fearless attitude in each particular and unique presentation. We explore the entertaining possibilities of an opera performance where the story becomes an extension from the stage to the audience. Our presentations reflect performances often found in other entertainment channels such as Film, Musical Theater, Cabaret, Television, Cartoons, and Plays. Our vision is of a new performance art form, which leaps over the boundary of what most people think of when they are "going to the opera." |
